At some time or another, most of us have taken a dive into the ocean to cool off. Kevin K. of Orange County, CA has done it numerous times. But the last
time he did it, he hit a sand bar with his head and his life forever changed. In an instant, Kevin went from being a very strong independent young man to someone who was 100% dependant on medical care. Kevin was single and without the greatest of insurance and his family was back in New York so once he was released from the hospital, he was placed in a nursing home surrounded by people living only the end of their lives. This was a horrible existence for a young, vibrant man; Kevin’s future wasn’t bright and he too began to die.
But one nice sunny day at the beach, just like the day he was injured, Kevin sat staring out at the ocean looking at the powerful surf that once made him happy and wondering about life and how powerless he felt. He wanted to do something; anything that could change his outcome. At that moment a stranger approached Kevin asked him about his injury and if he had heard about Project Walk down in Carlsbad. Kevin had not, so the gentleman asked him if he would like to go visit Project Walk. Having nothing to look forward too, Kevin took the ride down the freeway. That ride forever changed his life; it gave him hope again and a chance to improve his life and future. Due to some amazing events and people in Kevin’s life, he started at Project Walk. He became strong enough to leave the nursing home and rented a first floor apartment. That was a little over four years ago. Kevin, who at one time could only shrug his shoulders, can now move his legs; push a manual chair; ride a normal spin bike using only his muscles to pedal the bike; he is healthy; and he is becoming independent. His newest accomplishment is standing and taking assisted steps. Kevin has a future and he is working very hard to make it better. With the help of his family and friends and the work done at Project Walk with the Dardzinski Method™ for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery, Kevin’s new goal is walking!
